Trine — 120°, orb 8°

A trine is a 120° separation with an orb of 8°. The four elements are arranged so that signs of one element are 120° apart, which is why element siblings show up as trines on the sign pages.

There are four closed triangles: the fire signs, the earth signs, the air signs, and the water signs. Each triangle is three pairs, and each pair of centers is exactly 120°. Those twelve pairs are listed below. A planet-to-planet trine uses the same angle but the real longitudes, so a Sun in early Aries and a Moon in late Leo can fall outside the 8° orb even though both are fire signs.

Do not confuse this with the sextile. Sextile is 60° and orb 6°. A “soft aspect” paragraph that treats 60° and 120° as the same relationship will not match a chart this engine prints.

The sign page for Aries therefore links Leo and Sagittarius as trines, not as a vague fire-family note. The degrees are the content. The element label is a cross-check.

Worked numbers: 15° and 135° are exactly 120°, a trine, the Aries center to the Leo center. 15° and 128° are 113° apart, and 120 minus 113 is 7, still inside the 8° orb. 15° and 111° are 96° apart. 96 minus 90 is 6, so that gap is a square, not a trine. The targets 60, 90, 120, and 180 sit more than 16° apart, so the 8° orbs do not overlap. The sextile’s 6° orb does not overlap them either.

Questions

Why do element siblings trine?

Same-element signs are spaced 120° apart on the tropical ecliptic. 120° is the trine angle, and the orb is 8°.

Does every fire-sign pair of planets trine?

Only when their actual longitudes fall within 8° of 120°. Sharing an element is not enough if one body is at the start of its sign and the other is at the end.
