♌ Leo — ecliptic 120° to 150°

Leo occupies tropical ecliptic longitude 120°–150°, about 30 days from 23 July to 22 August. It is fixed fire, ruled by the Sun, the body the sky map names SUN.

The Sun ruling Leo is easy to confuse with the Sun traveling through Leo. For about 30 days each year the Sun’s longitude does fall between 120° and 150°. The other eleven months, the Sun is elsewhere, and Leo is still ruled by the Sun. The sky slice on this page separates those facts: rulership is in the profile, and the SUN row appears in the table only when today’s longitude is inside this window.

Fixed fire has one member. The other fire signs are the trines, because fire signs are 120° apart: Aries at the 15° center and Sagittarius at the 255° center. Both are trines with an 8° orb. Aquarius is the opposition at 180°. Taurus and Scorpio are the squares at 90°. Gemini and Libra are the sextiles at 60°, and only those use the 6° orb. Cancer and Virgo are adjacent at 30°. Aries is both an element sibling and a trine; that double description is specific to the fire (and, separately, earth, air, and water) triplicity, but the longitudes here are Leo’s: 120° through 150°.

A Leo sun sign is one column in the planet table. It is not the Ascendant, not the Moon, and not a house. Placidus houses on this site are computed from the birth time and the birth coordinates. Without the time, the calculator still returns the Sun’s sign from the date, and it will not pretend the rising sign is known.

Questions

When is the Sun actually inside Leo?

When its ecliptic longitude is between 120° and 150°, about 23 July to 22 August. Outside those dates the Sun rules Leo and is not in Leo.

Which signs are 120° from Leo?

Aries and Sagittarius. Both are trines with an 8° orb, and they are also the other fire signs.

Does Leo’s sun sign set the houses?

No. Placidus cusps come from the birth time and place. The sun sign only labels the Sun’s 30° sector.
