♐ Sagittarius — ecliptic 240° to 270°

Two hundred seventy degrees is the December solstice longitude and the first degree of Capricorn. Sagittarius is the sector immediately before that line. A Sun at 269.4° is still Sagittarius. At 270.0° the label changes. Late-December birthdays that fall after the ingress are Capricorn even when a newspaper column still says Sagittarius season.

Jupiter is the ruler. Jupiter’s orbital motion is slow next to the Moon, so the sky table may show Jupiter in this sign for months, or not at all, depending on the year. The profile does not update rulership when Jupiter leaves. Mutable fire’s companions at 120° are Aries and Leo, the trines, orb 8°. The opposition is Gemini at 180°. Virgo and Pisces are the squares at 90°. Libra and Aquarius are the sextiles, orb 6°. Scorpio and Capricorn are the unscored 30° neighbors.

Mutable fire is not a house and not a rising sign. Jupiter’s sign on a birthday can differ from the Sun’s sign. The birth chart returns both longitudes from the same ephemeris call. Entertainment copy that swaps “Sagittarius” into a generic paragraph is exactly what this page refuses: the numbers above are the page.
